I am working on an older sullair 50hp stationary rotary. the oil sight gauge is located in the corner of the frame versus on the oil sump. the gauge is vented to a high spot on the sump, but the bottom tube tees in with the oil suction at the bottom of the sump. when the compressor is off, the oil level is fine, but when you start it the oil level can no longer be seen. it is normal for the level to drop some, but not this much. when it unloads the level comes up a bit. when you stop the machine the level comes back up to normal. the machine is full of oil up to the filler neck on the sump. any ideas on what is causing this more than normal drop in level?

it is normal what happend here! when the compressor is running the oil flows the the tubes, hoses the cooler oil filter etc.. and when you stop the compressor oil falls from higher positions (cooler, hoses, etc) to a lower one (oil tank). that's why oil level invreases when the commpressor is stoped. to be sure that oil level is ok you should check the level be fore you start the compressor. be sure that the levek is about 3/4 off the glass sight. i hope this anwser your question
