Scroll or screw compressor?

  • Question Title: Scroll or screw compressor?

I need a compressor that can supply constant air supply (depending on model 10 to 150 l/min) at pressures up to 10 bar.
Mainly 10 to 60 l/min but the bulk at 30 to 60 l/min. 6 bar being the most common pressure used on our installations

I can use a range of different compressors for different applications but constant volume at constant pressure is very important.(Sustainable for up to 20 hours of operation per day)

It will be used as an industrial application supporting the system that we manufacture. Low noise and oil-free air is also required.

Please advise on maintenance cost and reliability of different types.

The rotary vane/screw type or the Scroll type compressors seem more suitable than the piston type.

We would like to supply these compressors with the installation of all our systems

For your application, oil-free rotary screw and scroll compressors are the most suitable.

Scroll compressors might have an higher purchase price, but they need little (only greasing the bearings and changing the air filter and other small stuff) maintenance. They are quiet and elegant.

For larger air flows, units are available with multiple scroll elements in one unit.

An oil free screw compressor or an oil-flooded screw compressor with extra filters to clean the air is your other option.

An oil flooded compressor with filters is the cheapest option. But it depends on how clean you need the air to be. And keep in mind there is always a (small) chance of oil in your compressed air system.

An oil free compressor would be better suited but are more expensive and make more noise.

Piston/reciprocating compressors are out of the question for you I guess. Yes, there are oil-free types, but they all make a lot of noise and are more suited for smaller air flow applications.

If the price is not a problem, I would say go for a scroll compressor.

Good luck,

Cas.
