High Temp during loading of compressor

  • Question Title: High Temp during loading of compressor

I have 3 screw type rotary compressors with capacity 1150Nm3/hr each. One comp. is standby and other 2 works in lead lag mode.

Lead compressor gets onload at 9.0 barg and offload at 10.0 barg while if pressure in instrument air header decreases due to increased consumption then lag compressor comes in onload position at 8.5 barg and gets offload when pressure reaches at 9.5 barg.

My problem is when lag compressor gets onload it gives high temp alarm at compressor discharge and sometimes trips due to high temp. trip.

It happens only for half a min. to 1 minute and then stabilizes. Kindly suggest why it is happening and ways to mitigate it.

Hello Fahim,

Thank you for your question. Does this always happen to the same compressor? What if you switch the lead/lag settings, does the problem transfer to the other compressor?

If it is always the same compressor, look for a problem locally on that compressor. Oil level ok? Coolers dirty?

If it is always the 'lag compressor'.. it could be due to the compressor room installation/layout.

What is the temperature in the compressor room? Do the compressor share ducting? Maybe hot air from the 'lead' compressor is blowing into the 'lag' compressor when the 'lag' compressor is stopped. After starting it needs a minute to remove the heat after which it runs normal again..

Just a though... hard to say from here without seeing installation myself.

Good luck and let me know if you fixed it, I'm curious to know what it is. If you need any more help, just let me know.
